The feedback I received:
-The shot were well thought out and carefully planned.
-Horror is clearly the genre and there is a great build up of tension.
-THe music needs to be smoother
The picture above was taken at the same time I shot the shots for my trailer.I knew that I wanted there to be hint and little give aways that there will be a supernatural element. Therefore I had the idea to turn the water red to symbolise blood therefore to do this I took the original image which you see in the bottom right hand corner and used a tool called instant alpha and removed the water and the sky. This the enabled me to put the original images on the page, then a layer of red.I did this by creating a regular shape and then changed the opacity from 100% to 34%.I then layered the images with the cut out part over the red.I have done it this way so I still get the sort of water texture to try and keep the image as authentic as I can even thou there are supernatural features within the poster. The image underneath is a more cleaned up and more neatly cropped.

The pictures above were of me experimenting with potential magazine images.I knew that I wanted red to be quite a predominant colour throughout the promotional package. To create the images above I have changed the hue& saturation in order to make the image black and white and I have also changed the temperature and exposure slightly to bring out the eyes more.Going back to the theme of red I decided to duplicate the pictures and then crop the tears out so I could then layer then over the black and white image. The results as you can see in the picture furthest to the right is a mono picture with a hint of eye escaping the eyes. This could suggest demons or the supernatural like I want to achieve in my promotional package. However going back I don't think i'm going to use this image on my front cover because I feel that there is to much going on in the picture which makes the front cover look crowded which is not the look I was going from.I want the same sort of idea however I feel just the face may be more effective for my magazine front cover.
Therefore I have picked a photo from the same shot as the previous picture however cropped it slightly so there are no hands or arms in the picture.I have then changed the exposure to then darken the face and I have also changed the contrast so that the hair will face into a black background which is what I wanted as it will then make the reader focus more on the face. This is the picture I will use on my final magazine.
I have made the changes due to my feedback on my first draft and above as you see is the result:
This is the second draft to my trailer.Taking the feedback from my first draft of my film trailer and adapted it to produce this version.I have increased the amount of eye catching shots at the increase the enigma about what the films about and therefore make people want to watch the rest of the trailer.Within my trailer now I have also picked up the amount of music used throughout my trailer and added an extra bit in to add a shock and creepiness to my trailer.Within the second draft of the trailer I have also decreased the amount of title shots I originally had as it was just to much for the audience to read and also it made what narrative I was trying to establish confusing and bewildering to the audience.
I order to now start to bring the production of my trailer to a close I will start to make sure my promotional package ties all together nicely so my film,'Ava' will have a promotional package just like the professional films do in the industry.
I now plan to ask a wider audience by creating survey's and questionnaires and handing them to a wider range of people in order to get a broad opinion and then taking the feedback and make the final tweaks.
My Magazine:
- Barcode is blurry
- Weird line around Empire
- Pictures in film tape boxes have white lines around them
- Picture behind cover lines is blurry
- Text for coverlid is a bit bland
- Avatar feels a bit out of place of my magazine
- Headlines don't really relate to film.
- Relate the writing inside the circle more to horror.
Movie Poster:
- Red eyes edges need straightening
- 'A film by Charlotte Green' Maybe rephrase it to 'From the director who brought you' or 'The producer of'.I could maybe even try to move these to different locations on my poster as it might fit somewhere a lot better,
- Credit Block-I need to look more accurately at a credit block on a professional film poster.
- The red of the water needs softening around the edges.
- There's a stage bar down the sides of the poster.
Locations I used where:
Gretton (A country side village perfect for the creepy suspense shots I wanted to use within my trailer.)
Gretton (A country side village perfect for the creepy suspense shots I wanted to use within my trailer.)
The second one especially is where I filmed the running scenes as it was quite a narrow space outside which meant that even when timing in broad daylight the light was darkened which in itself created a creepy feel to the shots captured here.
Props
Here are some of the props I used within filming which I have organised to be in each of the scenes in order to create the effect and atmosphere that I wanted.I created (made) and gathered all of these props myself and chosen each location to what we want.

Why do audiences chose to consume certain texts?
This can be for many reasons like because they just get enjoyment out of it or they can relate to it or they can escape with it.There are many different theory's that help to explain why people consumer certain texts. For example for my horror trailer people watch horror's because they enjoy being on the edge and full of suspense. They watch horror' for the jump scares and rush of adrenaline. This relates to the bloomer and Katz theory of uses in gratification as they mainly watch horror's for entertainments.Audiences chose to consumer texts sometimes because they are a passive audience and just watch it because they can however they do not actually take in anything they are watching however, most people that go into a horror are alive as they chose to go and watch one.
Some Research/Notes:
The Effects Models
The Hypodermic Model-The intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver
Active audience theory argues that media audiences do not just receive information passively but are actively involved, often unconsciously, in making sense of the message within their personal and social contexts whereas a Passive is allowing what happens or what others do, without active response or resistance.
Two step flow The Hypodermic model quickly proved too clumsy for media researchers seeking to more precisely explain the relationship between audience and text. As the mass media became an essential part of life in societies around the world and did NOT reduce populations to a mass of unthinking drones, a more sophisticated explanation was sought.
Examples:Childs play 3,Manhunt,Clockwork Orange and severance.
These movies have all very strong concepts of violence which can effect children or adults can be influenced.
Moral Panic
Out-cry about certain media's like Films or Books.
People can copy things,become copycats.
Uses and Gratifications-Blumer and katz
We are not totally passive as an audience.
This theory argues that when a lot of us do watch a violent film we are not influenced by the violence. It kind of almost gives us the audience a feel for the horror and prevents us from doing anything like that because of the effects that we have seen that can happen.
The audience has the power and we can choose our own meanings (For example we can chose what bits we would like to see and avoid any bits we don't)
- Diversion
- Escapism
- Information
- Pleasure
- Comparing relationships and lifestyles with one's own.
- Sexual stimulation
Watching something violent and seeing the effects can prevent it from actually happening.
Reception Theory-Stuart Hall
Encoded and decode meanings
1)Dominant (Accept all easy meanings)
2)Negotiated (Accept some of the meanings)3)Oppositional (Accepts none of the meanings)
The meaning of a "text" is not inherent within the text itself, but the audience must elicit meaning based on their individual cultural background and life experiences
How does audience theory relate to my film trailer?
My trailer does include a lot of violent scenes with could promote violent behaviour however, this is covered by the age certificate which means that because they are 15 they are consenting and a knowing audience of what to see. Both my magazine and film poster both include links to blood with could indicate gore and horror within my film (Trailer). This is covered again by the fact the audience that are allow to watch my trailer are knowing audience therefore, can pick the bits they chose to watch or go in knowing that there are going to be some graphic scenes.
This is the first sought cut of my trailer the feedback I received for this was:
- There are way to many transitions,It's to much for the audience to read therefore people could lose interest in the trailer easily.
- The 'waterworks productions' is in the wrong place and it never says presents that more seen in movies.
- The dialogue at the start does not need to be included and it's quite hard to hear him.I will discard this clip because I agree.
- The title does not appear to fit in with the rest of the Ava fonts and looks I have used on my ancillary products.
- I the nightmare scenes there is a odd transition:looking back I see this was done by mistake as it was not intended to be on there. When placing the transition it must have jump from the shot before it.
- The sound should flow a bit more smoothly.
- The title slides at the end are far to long and the font does not match the fonts I have used on my ancillary products.

In all of my filming logs I have bunched about 2-3 days worth of filming into one blog.
I have just completed what I think will be my last day of film.I have now decided to try and get my outside shots.I have decided to leave these lil last because the weather towards the end of 2015 became quite horrible as we approached winter so I have now carefully selected this week in order to do my outside shots. The filming went quite well as I filmed at dusk as I needed quite a darkened atmosphere however I still needed a little light in order for the footage to show up to a clear and acceptable standard that I wanted to get.The footage a capturing at the boating lake was quite picturesque and the way the sun hit the water really presented quite a happy atmosphere which is what I wanted to capture at the beginning of my trailer. To show the contrast between the horror that then comes into my trailer. The shots were quite clear and clear therefore they should hopefully be suitable for the beginning of my own trailer,'AVA'.
A day or two after that day of filming I went to a new by village and did some filming with 3 other characters. However I filmed from Ava's point of view in a troubling situation to capture the sort of isolation wanted in the Ava's character.I feel this worked quite well as it will give a different scope to my trailer and allow the preview of some more characters in my trailer. The footage could have been controlled a bit better however, only once I import it into final cut pro will I know if the footage is usable.
Magazine Front page feedback:
Missing an image:This is because I have yet to take the image,I have planned a new shot in which I have planned to capture the main image for my magazine from. There is also 4 different fonts which does not commonly happen on a magazine front cover as there is normally only two or three different types of fonts. Therefore,I will need to adapt the fonts and reduce them so they are all grouped in there own fonts. The font for tagline doesn’t match the font on the poster therefore,I will need to correct this by picking the same font for both to keep continuity. Also the bar code is blurry, therefore, this will need to be changed. The date and price too large therefore, these will need to be changed for the final draft. The spacing in ‘Exorcist’ section needs tweaking, film images are blurred, word ‘Ava’ is probably too large, cover line at the top is too large for the page and hard to read.I will make all of these changes in order to create my final products.
Feedback for the movie poster:
First of all the credit block too large therefore this will need to be changed in order to keep some space in the posters.Punctuation issues in the credit block – commas – too much ‘Charlotte Green’ to be realistic. These will all need to be corrected in order to make sure the movie poster is accurate to the professional one we see today.Photoshopping of image needs improving as it looks jagged, the image is too ‘obvious’ to create intrigue for the viewer.I will re edit this image for the time being however,I feel i main changed the images to show prep haps a location involved within the trailer. The tagline doesn’t really make sense and is in a strange font compared to the others therefore,I will research and come up with a new tagline and make sure the fonts are the same on both ancillary products. The actors names too big so I will need to grease them. Also as a little thing to help the layout of my poster I could move date to bottom of page.
If I made all of these corrections it will help me to make my ancillary products more accurate to the ones made by professionals in the film industry today.
The feedback I received from my first draft of my magazine front cover:
I was basing my magazine on the existing movie magazine company Empire and therefore I tried to base it off of some of there existing covers. This one in particular uses a similar layout to the gone girl issue empire released.I looked specifically at this issue because I feel the film it is advertising is very similar to mine so I wanted to get a feel of how empire made a issue surrounding a film with the genre.I feel they have achieved this with the use of the main image and colour schemes. The actual problems to my magazine are the sticker is off centre and way to big for the cover itself, therefore this will need to be reduced or got rid of.The Empire logo has a strange image in one of the letter I will need to get another template for the title.Ava made need to be made smaller and also the film highlighting other films at the bottom will need to be extended so it almost runs off of the page. The barcode is blurry and also there are to many types of fonts used for a normal magazine front cover therefore these will need to be reduced to 3 at the most.I may also need to resize the date and issue number a touch to make my issue actuate to the ones the professionals use.I could maybe re-think the image as it's a bit grainy which is not commonly features on magazine front covers. Also more in depth headings can be used in order to make this look like a professional Empire magazine.Feedback for my first draft for my movie poster:
Some of the blurriness here is down to the quality of the photo however this is my first draft of the poster. The images as you can see are not of the standard they should be for a poster therefore the images will be totally rethink as they don't give any hint to as to what the story maybe about. Therefore the images will be changed and I will need to gather my own images. The title Ava is way to small and is not positions correctly therefore,it would be more useful to movie it to were the title is normally placed on a magazine and keeping it in convention.I will keep it close to conventions because I feel it presents some order and structure to the posters and therefore allows you to be more creative in other areas like the main image. The names of the actors at the top and quite big so they will need to be reduced and the tagline underneath just doesn't make any sense along with the font is just to simple so the whole idea surrounding the tagline will need to be looked at.The credit block at the bottom is to large and also off centre so it will need to be resized into a block format and reduced.
Narration:The theme of the letter coming through a mysterious box has been lost as once a gathered these shots i thought the footage was quite weak in itself and the box did not stand out in the shot as much as i was hoping.Even when I then did the shots in a tighter frame something just didn’t feel right about it.I felt the shots where bland and ineffective therefore I adapted this idea to show how my main protagonist is in communication with her dead lover.I did this by focusing more on the rise en scene and have actually planned to cover an entire wall in notes that were originally in the box.I felt this picked up the pace in my trailer and also made it more visually appealing.
This is the first draft for my film trailer.I need to work on transitions and music.
