Written evaluation-Ted Re-cut Trailer

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In preparation for my media trailer, I re-cut an existing trailer in order to change the genre.I did this simply so I could get a feel for the software final cut pro as i have never used it before and I also did it to prove how editing is so important within the making of a trailer and how different changes within the trailer can change peoples perception of the trailer. For my trailer I picked the film 'TED' a comedy and tried to turn it into a horror however I feel throughout the production I sort of swayed the trailer more towards crime as there was a lot more crime features than there were horror. However we the concept of horror in my mind at the start I researched into the horror conventions like main features, history, past and recent examples. This helped me to identify what makes certain films and horror and with the information I began to re-cut my trailer. However I feel I may have challenged the horror genre because within the film there was a lot of fighting therefore that was a main feature within the TED trailer therefore this featured heavily within my trailer which made it more of a crime drama therefore maybe I developed the genre within my trailer as hybridisation like that with those to genre's is quite unusual to see now-a-days.

Many trailers today have text in between cuts within the trailer to help the audience identify the type of film it is and within my trailer I did not do this. This was not intentional it was just something I simply forgot to add in.One of the comments I got back for my trailer was that it was too short, which i completely agree with however if I had remember these text gaps I feel it would have been an appropriate length.I feel I may have challenged convention with my use of music as I started the 'Teddy bear song' while the production company's logo's were appearing which is not commonly done within trailers therefore in this way I have challenged conventions in comparison to other trailers.
