What is the purpose of movie posters?

Film posters have a lot of purposes which makes them one of a lot of crucial tools for the success of a film (meaning it's profits). The main purpose of a film poster is to advertise and inform the audience of an upcoming film; through important information such as release date, actors and suitability with reference to age (BBFC certification). However, film posters also merge illustrations, lettering, colouring and a well thought out layout to create speak peek inside the movie. An effective image to entice an audience into seeing the film. They focus on different elements such as, powerful photographs and graphics to make posters effective and something the audience would want to see. These visual elements can also give the audience an insight into the themes and genre that will be portrayed throughout the film. All of these elements will hopefully encourage the audience to go and see the film.

Main Poster Analysis:

Character Poster:
Teaser Poster:

Identify similarities and differences between these four types of poster and discuss why these are important.

-Through all of the poster that i have analysed from the film,'Regression' I have notice that there is a strong house hold style to each of the posters. The each use the same tones and in all of them they play with the contrast of light and darks. This might be because of the super natural elements that features in the films and that appear as hints in each of the posters.A upside down cross most commonly used in black magic rituals is most heavily featured within each poster. In the main poster it features as cracks in woods on the side of what looks like an abandoned shed as shown as light escapes the cracks. It is also features within the teaser poster as it's seen as Ethan Hawkes character is holding a necklace with the same cross appearing in the shadow on the end of it.Across all of the poster it either feature Ethan Hawke or Emma Watsons character suggesting these are the main characters. The is a Character poster for Ethan Hawkes character however,i chose to analyse Emma Watsons posters because i felt it presented more of an enigma about what the films narrative entails.

However, there are some difference between each of the posters as for example they are all made for a different purpose. The purpose of a poster is to not only promote the film to and audience but also sell to the audience. They are created to encourage audiences to want to know more and therefore go and watch the film. The main poster includes a credit block which states the name of the important crew and cast member that helped construct the movie however, this does not feature on any of the other posters. For example in the teaser trailer this is replaced with the words,'Coming Soon' in order to encourage audiences to follow the promotional packages and go and watch the movie.Int eh character poster it feature neither of there aspects and focus solely on the character presented in large in the poster. His is kind of using the start theory as Emma Watson is a well known actress best known for her work in the Harry Potter series and therefore having this poster will encourage more people to go and watch the movie because of the fact that she is in it.On the main poster the title is displayed in red suggests passion, love, war.and blood.I would take this as blood as it is a common feature of horror films. However this is not featured on any of the other posters which could be because it's trying to make the main poster more eye-catching and overall the one that most people identify the film with.

Depending on what poster you are looking at each all have slightly different aspects that make them the poster that they are.For example if the teaser poster I have above and previously analysed has a credit block then it probably would be classed more as a main poster as it's not just teasing the audience it's giving them a kind of full description.
