This trailer is a common example of horror's today.
It opens to a low lit location of a house.It's a establishing shot with shows a house and this can link to it being a horror as family's or groups of people are usually included within a horror films.Then we here dialogue before the characters appear on screen,this gives us an inigma as to who the characters are which gives us a element within the story that connects to a common main feature of horror films which is the scare factor.As the dialogue starts a sting can heard as a low pitched thump introduces the conversation.This gives us a pre set paths as to were the conversation is heading.From this we can gather the characters are worried and possibly scared.As from the posters and title we already now before watching the trailer that this film is a horror about a possessed doll therefore we already have this haunting theme within our minds.
The events quickly change within the trailer as the two characters previously seen in a two shot representing them a couple,within a mid shot in a different location.One character is seen to be covered in blood which gives us the immediate main feature of blood and gore.Still in a low lit location gives us a dark and sister setting,while fast pace editing accompany's this first scene.Horror movie today are often made up from a lot of cliche's however,this is becoming less popular as new genre's are created.The character Annabelle is introduced as the women we see in the first part walks past the camera and she can be seen far away from the camera within a room the character first walks by.
The first part of the scene gives us the perception of a different genre,however after the main object is introduced the horror genre really takes place.There is immediatly a jump scare within a flashback showing us as the audience why this doll came to be what it is. Within this short snap of a scene we see blood and violence which indicates a gory sort of a horror as many horror can be categorised within itself.
As a problem has been identified,the scene cuts to the kind of aftermath of the two characters.The natural lighting presents a feel of verisimilitude to give us the sense of a real situation. The close up of the hands together gives us the impression of a sub-genre of romance.As the scene then jumps and to the two characters moving and light music fils the scene presenting a happy and family atmosphere.However this happy atmosphere doesn't last long as 'Annabelle' soon makes appearance which suggest to us as a audience that something is about to happen.After Annabelle's appearance the screen dissolves into a black screen with a voice over saying,
'I like your doll',the pitch of the voice reiterates the fact that this is a horror as the message is conveyed in a slight whispier which is commonly associated with supernatural creatures within horror films.
After this scene the trailer quickly becomes dark and sister with the help of the lighting and non-diegetic music.The scene contrast is very low as we cut into a shot of blood (again something typical shown in horror film) rolling into Annabelle's glass (doll) eye.The non-diegetic music put us as the audience on edge,making the audience vulnerable and ready to be scared.More dissolved screens follow this and with a what sound like ticking sound effect to add suspense.Suddenly the scary music stops and music runs contrapuntal with the screen as it does not fit into the scene or the genre at all.
Throughout this trailer family becomes a big part and family's are normally the most targeted people to be involved with a horror movie,therefore within the trailer we start to see events and problem happening to the family,which again highlights the fact that this is horror movie.The editing towards the end shows the family to be in many fatal situations however as the editing is so fast we only see a 2-4 second glimpse as to whats happening and this is good because it make us ever as an audience to find out whats going to happen.Once this fast step sequence has happened the title of the move appears,'Annabelle' on a navy/black screen representing death and reiterating the fact that this is a horror movie.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL - Official International Trailer HD
The opening shot clearly states the production industry's in order to appeal to audiences that follow the many films created by the conglomerate which in this case is,'Warner Brothers'.The scene opens to three men revealed in a medium establishing shot within an elevator at what looks like a hotel due to there uniforms.We (as the consumers) can get the sense of a comedy here because of the costumes as they are brightly coloured and very true as to what we as the audience would imagine a 'Lobby Boy' to be wearing.This sets the tone for quite humorous,fun and enjoyable movie as light music surrounds the scene with is something we would associate with a comedy movie.Immediately in this establishing shot we can see what the audience would expect to see if they were in a sterotypical hotel themselves,which means the production company's have gave the audience a sense of reality and played to the likes of their audience.Although it is not clear within this trailer as to what the genre is, it's more about the style of the early 1900's that comes across within the trailer.
Throughout watching trailer we can sort of get a sense of a build-up as a story line develops through the use of narration. It is stated from what seems to be the main characters that,
''I become his pupil and he was to be my councillor and guardian'',which gives us the impression that their is a sort of parental relationship going on between these characters.This implies the story will be about these two learning off each other,however as this is only 0:38 seconds into the trailer it implies this might be sub-plot to the main story.This mention is then followed by many scenes cut together to shows the lives of the main characters.These scenes still represent a humorous feel which suggests this is still a comedic film.
The editing throughout has quite fast and shows that a lot of story lines are happening at once and this represents a busy scene throughout this trailer.This represents a comedic feel as many comedy trailers don't want to reveal the jokes and therefore only show brief parts of the movie in order to not reveal the witty feel to the movie.The genre of this film is quite niche and therefore the editing because of it's pace sort of disorientates you as the audience.The editing help us in the trailer to identify the events within the movie which overall is presented in a busy way.
The problem that develops within this trailer is created through the mention of the police.Now this creates a very different direction for the film rather than the comedy route I had originally anticipated,now with the mention of a murder.The genre changes to crime meaning there is now a hybrid within,
'The Grand Budapest Hotel' genre.The re-literation of the murder by showing a picture creates quite a dark feel to the film and this is again created through the colour scheme. The darkness is again empathised by the very tonal image as previously we had only seen bright and eye-catching colours that suggested humour.The of jail is then tempted as the scenes uses a cut-a-way to show to men trying to escape from jail.The overall obstacle that is presented is the fact that a painting has gone missing and that they need to find it however it also stated that the main character 'Gustav.H' is a suspect in a murder creating a obstacle for the character to overcome and achieve there main goal of finding the painting.These are what looks like the events in which the main characters, 'Gustav.H' and 'The junior lobby boy' have to overcome.

Here is a re-cut version of the trailer that has been created by someone else in order to change the genre to comedy.
Analysis of both of the contrasting trailers.
Both trailers open with very different themes,the re-cut version has been changed to the genre of comedy.The re-cut opens with a voice over with an upbeat tune as the camera focuses on the main character (Jack Torrance),this is opposed to official trailer for 'The Shining', Where tense non-diegetic music sounds establishing shots and slight tilt shots in order to show a reveal of domineering and powerful character (Jack Torrance).Therefore both trailers immediately set different paths with regards to the genre which kind of distorts how we interpret the film.
The trailers is cut in many different ways.The re-cut versions is much more focused on the characters which gives us an understanding of a depth to the characters and with help from the narration is presents a happy feel to the characters.Now from that kind of back-story we know this is a horror about a man murdering his family therefore the contrast that we have between the official trailer and the re-cut is very different.The official trailers either uses wide establishing shots or close ups of the characters whereas the the second one used lots more medium shots which reveals the characters fully so that we as the audience can get a better understanding of them,which helps to create the comedic feel to it.
The actors and actresses also have different view points with regards to how the trailer has been re-cut from the original. Within the re-cut there is more focus on the character who is played by Jack Nicholson which at the time was quite a funny and famous actor therefore emphasising the family feel good genre that's created within the re-cut.However this is taken away from the original trailer which is a horror as the comedic element is not a common feature of a horror film which is why there is less character focus within the official trailer.
Within the post-production stages there is the edited image of the title of the film that appears in both trailers.However in the first one it appears with the connection of a church bell much like you would associate with a horror movie and the re-cut has a upbeat audio reading the title to the audience making it feel family friendly.This is in complete contrast to as it's seen in the re-cut version as the text is not 'The Shining' it's 'Shining'.The word on its own symbolises the brilliance of something,which does not have the same context as 'The Shinning' and again just emphasizing the evil tone set in the original trailer.
So we can see throughout watching and analysing the official and the re-cut version that they are two different genre's.The original movie is a horror and the re-cut is a romantic comedy.the events have changed dramatically throughout these two trailers in the official trailer is making out that the main character (jack) has a mental breakdown which in turn is the dilemma that the plot faces whereas in the re-cut the trailer makes out the Jack is going to adopt a child and he's happy.We know that the first one is a horror as there is mention of a killer and weapons are clearly shown all through the trailers however,we know that the re-cut is a family friendly movie as no weapons are shown and mainly shows the characters in two shots showing the developing relationship between the two characters.Furthermore,because the events have changed the whole story presented in the trailer gets distorted which does give us the impression of different genre's.
The editing within the re-cut trailer is done within quite long takes with brings sort of narrative to the trailer which overall presents a pleasant family feel good feel however within the official trailer there is a lot of jump shots to different locations within the trailer which shows a distorting pace to the rhythm of the editing.
Here we started looking into genre, and to do this we created a prezi based on one type of genre and record notes based on them all.
